We made it to Stratford - again!!

Rain storms and strong headwinds couldn't stop over 100 Stourbug members cycling from Stourbridge to Stratford upon Avon on Saturday 16th May, 2009.

For the third year running our trainees were up to the task, with all of them making the journey. Seventy seven female trainees, 18 female members and 8 male members cycled various distances, from 45 to 58 miles, culminating in the experience you see above - riding together through the streets of Stratford upon Avon to be met by friends and family.

The riders had been training for this day since mid January, and all were determined to make it, as many were raising money for favourite causes.

Stoubridge Bicycle User Group (Stourbug), NPower, Trek and Two Wheels, Amblecote, today (4/4/09) announces an innovative scheme to get more people cycling in Stoubridge and the surrounding area.

A £500 Community Award from NPower, and cash from Stourbug funds, has been used to purchase 4 Trek ladies hybrid bicycles. The bikes will be used for cycle training and loan to Stourbug members looking to experience a quality machine, or to ladies wanting to start cycling without first having to buy a bike. Members experiencing financial hardship can have access to the bikes free of charge.

The bikes have been supplied through local Trek dealer Two Wheels, of Brettel Lane, Amblecote. Two Wheels will service and maintain the machines.

Stourbug Chairman, Russell Eden, said, "Every year we see a lot of new members with bikes bought from 'discount cycle warehouses', 'supermarkets', 'toy shops' or 'motorists discount centres'. It's inevitable that these 'discount' bikes are incredibly heavy, of very poor quality and, as such, are awful to ride and do nothing to enhance cycling as a healthy activity. Our scheme gives prospective cyclists the chance to ride a proper bike that's pleasureable to use, and helps them to avoid buying any of the junk that's being heavily promoted to them."
